Things are heating up in every sense of the word this week, with Arsene Wenger rocking the shades as the rumour thermometer reaches new highs.
Having been known to place loyalty in even the most hapless of employees, hoarder Arsene Wenger looks set to finally take out the garbage. Heading the who’s who of tortured jokers are big money earners Andrey Arshavin (£75k a week), Nicklas Bendtner (£50k), and you might want to sit down for this, Marouane Chamakh and Manuel Almunia (both £60k a week). The Daily Mail claim the Arsenal manager wants to rid himself of a host of flops in order to accommodate a summer spending spree, and to appease club talisman Robin Van Persie by offering him a larger contract say The Daily Mail.
So, with Lukas Podolski’s month long pending transfer expected to finally go through at the end of the week, who else is on Wenger’s Radar?
The Gunners have been linked to Lille forward Eden Hazard (who hasn’t), Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila and Borussia Dortmund starlet Mario Gotze – who only recently extended his contract with the German’s to 2016. Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge and Blackburn midfielder Steven Nzonzi have also been mentioned by Wenger (again, according to the Daily Mail).
And then there’s Jan Vertonghen of course. The Mirror gives this old weather beaten horse of a link another run around, claiming Wenger will move early to sign the Belgian in the summer, and in turn avoid another absolute shambles following the nightmare of last year.
From one French manager to another, and Laurent Blanc is apparently set to become filthy rich, if he accepts the most untenable position in the footballing world that is. The Mirror claim with typical gusto that Chelsea have already offered the man £9 million a year, whilst also patronising us in the process by claiming “money is no object”.
But after the copious amounts of managerial babble flung at the public from those in the know around the Bridge, I don’t really want to discuss this in any greater detail.
Instead I’d rather tell you that Talk Sport are reporting Chelsea Midfielder Raul Meireles could soon be the subject of a bid from Juventus.
The old lady, who clearly did all their homework on the midfielder during those few months for Liverpool when he scored a few, are willing to cough up £9 million. The 29 year old must be very persuasive, or just very nice, as he’s somehow managed to establish himself as a first team regular for the Blues.
Elsewhere the Sun’s out again, this time warming us with the whimsical headline: “Dzeko may be ‘Edin’ for exit”. The Bosnian has been frustrated at his lack of opportunities at City, and rightly so, after performing well for nearly two months at the start of the season. Dzeko’s agent Irfan Redzepagic added fuel to the raging transfer flames, insisting: “He is not thinking about leaving.”
Finally, website Inside Futbol reveal Chelsea had the chance to sign one of football’s superstars when he was just 17. It was Eden Hazard, who I’ve heard might just be leaving Lille for quite a bit this summer.
