John Aldridge wants Liverpool to make ‘sneaky’ move in bid to replace Barca-bound Coutinho

Liverpool supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side edge past Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor to start 2018 with a crucial three points in their quest for a top four finish in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the New Year off the back of victories over Swansea City and Leicester City, results which took their unbeaten league run to 12 games dating back to their 4-1 mauling at the hands of Tottenham on October 22. And they extended that streak to 13 in Lancashire on Monday although were made to work for the win, with Sadio Mane’s excellent opener cancelled out by Johann Gudmundsson’s header three minutes from time, only for defender Ragnar Klavan to head home the winner in the fourth minute of injury-time to seal a 12th league success of the season for Klopp’s side.

Consequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent comments from club hero John Aldridge for The Irish Independent, in which he says that the Reds should make a ‘sneaky’ £40 million offer for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez this month.

The 29-year-old’s future at the Emirates Stadium has been subject of speculation for a while now given that his contract is up in the summer, and no extension has or looks likely to be agreed.

As such, the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with a move for the Chile international, although Reds hero Aldridge reckons his former club, for whom he played 104 times and scored 63 goals, should make a £40 million offer in a bid to replace Philippe Coutinho, who looks likely to move to Barcelona.

He said: ‘Liverpool made a real statement of intent when they paid £75m to sign Virgil van Dijk – and now they should put in a sneaky £40m offer to try and get Alexis Sanchez out of Arsenal.’

And with Sanchez proving his credentials in English football since moving to North London back in 2014, Klopp may see the 29-year-old as the ideal replacement for Coutinho should he indeed leave for the Nou Camp this month.

Landlord’s verdict: Philippe Coutinho’s proposed move to Barcelona could well take place this month, which may leave Liverpool with a big hole to fill in their attacking department ahead of the second half of the season.

And former Reds forward and club hero John Aldridge reckons that void should be filled by Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, who is another who looks set for a move away this month given that his contract is up in the summer.

And with 80 goals in just 164 games for the Gunners, Sanchez may well minimise the impact of Coutinho’s likely departure were to make what would a surprising move to Anfield this month.
