Alexis Sanchez’s form at Man Utd since his arrival has been well below par. The Chilean hasn’t been able to replicate the fine form that made him so deadly in an Arsenal shirt, and that’s been problematic for the Red Devils.
That said, he’s been regularly relied upon by Jose Mourinho nonetheless, and often, that’s had mixed results.
He’s popped up with some important goals and moments, but broadly speaking, he simply hasn’t been good enough, and it’s fair to say that if Man Utd hadn’t made such investment in him, Jose Mourinho likely would have dropped him a while ago.
It’s never too late, though, and the emergence of Anthony Martial should give Mourinho the push needed to finally drop Sanchez – permanently.
One key reason as to why Martial has struggled so much as of late is that he’s been forced to play out of position. With Alexis Sanchez preferring a role on the left, like Martial, the Frenchman has been shifted out to the right more often than not to accommodate for that – and that’s a position that he’s just not comfortable in.
He’s not able to cut in on his right foot, and he’s not able to be quite as creative when driving towards goal.
It’s no surprise that against Chelsea last week, Martial was able to excel from the left. He was undoubtedly their best player on that day.
It would make no sense to drop Martial out of the team, or to move him aside, just to accommodate a player that hasn’t impressed for the best part of a year.
Players cannot get special treatment, and a player like Sanchez is owed nothing. Jose Mourinho has shown that he’s not unwilling to drop Sanchez at points, but it’s time to do it perfectly – as Martial has done everything right recently.
