The Manchester United fans have been in fine spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after watching their side stage a dramatic turnaround in the Manchester derby last weekend.
Jose Mourinho has taken plenty of criticism from the supporters for his managerial style so far this season, but even his strongest critics had to praise the Portuguese manager for masterminding a Manchester derby win last weekend. With his side 2-0 down at half-time, it appeared the Premier League title was going to be decided by the end of Saturday evening, but United had other ideas.
Paul Pogba (valued at £82 million by Transfermarkt) finally delivered a masterclass performance on the big stage by scoring a quick-fire brace in the second half to draw United level and, the quality of his display suggests Mourinho should push him into a number ten role against West Bromwich Albion later today.
The French international has struggled to make an impact this season whilst operating alongside Nemanja Matic in midfield, but with Herrera back in the side he looked like a completely different prospect altogether.
The first-half rather bypassed Pogba and the rest of the United team as City dominated proceedings up until the half-time whistle. However, United’s controversial star intelligently timed his runs into City’s penalty area and scored two quality goals to draw his side level in the blinking of an eye.
His ability to influence the game in the final-third suggests he should operate further forward on a more regular basis, starting today against the Baggies. West Brom are rock-bottom of the Premier League and a team in turmoil, so today’s fixture represents an ideal opportunity for Mourinho to experiment with his team against a side who United should comfortably beat.
Considering how well Pogba played when the manacles which restricted him in a deeper-lying midfield role were broken off, Mourinho simply has to give his 25-year-old an opportunity to impress in a number ten role today – a decision which should prove to be a fruitful one for the Red Devils.
