Liverpool last week completed Philippe Coutinho’s mega transfer to Barcelona, with manager Jurgen Klopp now left with a near £150 million fortune to bolster his squad.
The loss of the little Brazilian will come as a blow to all associated with the club, but pragmatic fans here at The Transfer Tavern are excited by the future, and confident in Klopp’s ability to spend their massive windfall effectively and efficiently. A replacement for Coutinho will be one of the items on the agenda, with fans keen to see a quality man brought in to add to an already impressive attacking line-up of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino.
Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones provided an update on a potential replacement, reporting on Twitter that Leicester City man Riyad Mahrez would be keen on a move to Anfield, but no contact has been made by Liverpool regarding a potential deal with the Foxes. The Algerian has been in excellent form for the East Midlands side this season, scoring an impressive seven goals and registering another seven assist in only twenty-one league starts. Instrumental to Leicester’s shock title win two years ago, Mahrez could prove a wonderful addition to the Liverpool squad.
Landlord’s Verdict: Riyad Mahrez is arguably one of the best buys in the entire history of the Premier League, with the player picked up from French second-tier side Le Havre for a nominal fee, before emerging as one of the finest wide men in the top flight. A Premier League winners medal is also a real draw for Liverpool bosses, who will hope the player can inspire them to a trophy that has eluded them for so long.
However if Liverpool are looking for a Coutinho replacement in Mahrez they will not find it, with the Algerian best suited to cutting in from a wide position. Klopp would have to find a way of fitting Mahrez in alongside Salah and Mane, perhaps pushing Salah into the middle. However the Egyptian has excelled on the wing since his arrival from Roma, and it would be foolish to move him in the midst of such wonderful form.
Mahrez would add severe quality to this side, but he is no Coutinho replacement.
