West Ham supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side produce a lacklustre performance to lose 2-0 away at League One leaders Wigan Athletic on Saturday, thus bowing out of the FA Cup.
David Moyes’ men needed a replay and indeed extra time in that replay to edge past Shrewsbury Town in the preceding round, yet they were no match for Paul Cook’s Latics on Saturday at the DW Stadium. Goals either side of half time from Will Grigg coupled with a red card to Hammers defender Arthur Masuaku secured a deserved win for the third tier outfit, thus leaving the East London side firmly focusing on avoiding Premier League relegation between now and the end of the season.
Thus, there have been several disappointed West Ham fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet they are likely to be intrigued by a recent tweet from respected journalist Alan Nixon, who details that the club are set to resurrect their interest in Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey in the last knockings of the transfer window.
The 25-year-old made the move to St James’ Park back in 2016 after a three-year stint at Swansea City, in which time he has earned 82 appearances for the Magpies, 42 of which came last season in helping Rafa Benitez’s men win the Championship title.
However, recent reports from Nixon on Twitter suggest that the Hammers are seeking to resurrect a move for Shelvey, what with little over 24 hours remaining in the transfer window and Moyes somewhat short of sufficient midfield depth.
But whether the East London outfit are indeed able to seal a last-gasp deal for the England international very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: There’s no doubting Jonjo Shelvey’s capabilities on a football field, but obvious concerns remain about his discipline having twice been sent off for Newcastle United in the Premier League this season.
Nonetheless, David Moyes’ West Ham have reportedly been keeping tabs on the 25-year-old this month, only to reportedly be told that he is not for sale a matter of days ago, yet that doesn’t appear to have put the Hammers off as respected journalist Alan Nixon suggests that they are in for him again.
And with Pedro Obiang likely to be out for a while, Moyes may need to bring a midfielder in late on in the window to bolster his ranks, but whether that midfielder is Shelvey remains to be seen.
