West Ham fans in the Transfer Tavern will grumble at the name Dimitri Payet these days, after the love story in East London soon turned bitter in the past week.
The Frenchman has gone on strike at the club and is seeking an exit from the London Stadium, leaving West Ham in tatters as they frantically try to salvage anything positive from a situation they never expected to find themselves in.
Despite Payet having only recently signed a five-year deal, the international ace is keen to return to his homeland and a return to Marseille looks imminent.
That said, claims of the winger being a mercenary seem to be off the mark as it’s indicated he’ll take a pay-cut to move to the French side.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, French journalist Julien Laurens spoke about the potential exit and claimed the player never settled in London.
“He still hasn’t settled, his family hasn’t settled, the children are not happy in school here his wife isn’t happy either. They all went back to France, they’re already looking at houses and schools.”
“I keep hearing about ‘mercenaries’ but Payet will take a pay cut to go back to Marseille. It’s not about the money, the money has nothing to do with it.”
Our landlord understands the frustration of the fans but he also isn’t surprised to see Payet looking to move on, as the Hammers have been vastly underperforming this season.
