Journalist: This is what I think of Chelsea’s summer transfer window

Chelsea’s window ended with a bang, but the fans in the Transfer Tavern were pretty disappointed with most of it…

Indeed, after the capture of Alvaro Morata, it all went quiet for the Blues – and the fact that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rejected a move to Stamford Bridge has left the fans feeling very disappointed indeed.

Clearly, a frank assessment is needed behind the scenes at Chelsea, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Michael Emenalo and co drew similar conclusions to Chelsea journalist Dan Levene.

A prominent writer on all things SW6, Levene has kept fans up to date all summer long, and his description of Chelsea’s summer does provide an insight into what the experts think.

He said: “In overheated window where they didn’t want to splurge, Chelsea bought well. But missed targets, particularly Barkley, raise real concerns”.

It’s tough to argue that Chelsea didn’t buy well. The captures of players like Morata, Bakayoko and Rudiger look inspired, whilst Andreas Christensen and Charly Musonda’s returns look set to have a massive impact this season.

That said, both Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ross Barkley reportedly chose to pass on a move to Stamford Bridge, and that is an issue. Be it through a lack of confidence with the club, a lack of commitment or, indeed, a general lack of attraction Рthis is something that Chelsea need to recognise and act upon.

Still, there is reason for optimism at Stamford Bridge.

Landlord’s Verdict

Chelsea’s lack of success this summer is worrying, but it can be explained. To be fair to the club, major targets – like that of Morata and Bakayoko – were signed with relative ease.

The problems came when the Blues looked to pick up a few more options. These players – like Barkley and the Ox – likely wouldn’t have played regularly, and perhaps that is why they chose not to move.

It’s a problem, but the Blues worked around it well – and they should benefit from that this season.
