Liverpool remain firmly in the race for the Premier League title as they continue to grind out the results needed to challenge Manchester City at the top of the division. However, there would be some that would be right to suggest that recent performances could be of a better standard as they are in must-win territory.
Virgil van Dijk has been an important member of the team since joining the Anfield outfit in January 2018 and has shown why Jurgen Klopp spent £75million to sign him from Southampton. The Dutchman has become a firm favourite with fans at the club as well with the performances he has put in and it appears the manager has provided supporters with some exciting news about the enforcer’s future.
What’s the News?
Speaking to The Telegraph, Klopp revealed that Van Dijk sees his future at Liverpool and will continue to improve.
“Virgil came here and it was a big step for him,” he said. “He knows he can improve and he wants to improve. He was at Celtic and could win titles, but he sees his future here now.”
There is no denying how important Van Dijk has become for Liverpool since joining the club, as he immediately helped to improve the defence and has continued to go from strength-to-strength.
The Holland international, who is now valued at £67.5m by Transfermarkt, has been the leader that the club have been missing at times, whilst he has also been someone that Klopp knows he can rely on at the back, with the likes of Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan not having been the most reliable during their Anfield careers.
With a player of his quality, it would not be wrong to suggest that there are likely going to be rumours about other clubs being interested in him, however, the German’s remarks must surely help to keep fans at ease and feel confident that they can keep hold of the 27-year-old for a while longer.
With every game a must-win, whether that be in the Premier League or the Champions League, Van Dijk will have to be at his best to ensure that Liverpool are within a chance of obtaining silverware this season and there is no better time to continue than the club’s away trip to Southampton on Friday.
Liverpool fans, do you expect to see Van Dijk at the club for many years to come? Or would you be concerned if a ‘bigger’ club come calling for his services? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
