‘Just another Ciaran Clark’ – Newcastle fans really don’t want club to sign 28-year-old

The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been turning their nose up at the idea that the club could be signing West Brom’s Craig Dawson. The versatile defender who can play at either right-back or centre-back has been linked with a move to St James Park for a fee of around £15 million. The 28-year-old is being touted by supporters as a replacement for Chancel Mbemba who is leaving for Anderlecht.

The Magpies propping our bar up have just come off the back of two extremely successful seasons. Rafa Benitez, in his first two full seasons in the Northeast, has guided the club to winning the Championship and then a 10th place finish in their first back in the Premier League, despite being restricted by Mike Ashley’s stranglehold over the club’s finances and incomings during transfer windows.

This season Newcastle have a chance to show a real statement of intent. The fans will be hoping that it will be another year where they remain well clear of relegation and some fans will even be looking at European football as a real possibility. The Geordies can take inspiration from Burnley on that front, who will compete in the Europa League next season, although most fans are questioning the need to sign Dawson, especially when he’s 28-years-old and the club already has a settled back four.

Considering the form of both Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune this season, you can understand the fans frustration at being linked with Dawson for such a large fee. The fans will be hoping that these rumours have no substance.
