Not even Champions League success could prevent the revolving door of ins and outs at Chelsea this summer.
Unsurprisingly the blues were linked with a whole host of wingers from across Europe as Roberto Di Matteo looks to implement the kind of revolution in style that Andre Villas Boas was either not allowed or not capable of completing.
It appears that even the string of stars already to have headed through the Stamford Bridge door marked arrivals has not been enough to end the speculation.
The Metro are the latest to get in on the action with a report that Chelsea are ready to renew their interest in Shakhtar Donetsk Winger Willian, but it’ll cost them £21 million if the Brazilian is to follow Hazard & co into the Stamford Bridge dressing room.
The sheer depth and scale of the turnover of players at Chelsea this summer means that the arrival of a player in the mould of the technically gifted Willian can not be ruled out. But in comparison to Hazard and Mata it is difficult to see where Willian would be able to force his way into Di Matteo’s starting eleven.
As Chelsea look to lower the age and abilities of the entire squad not just the starting line-up the 23 year-old could perhaps be of use to the blues as a squad player. However even by Roman’s standards £21 million for a player likely to feature in only a handful of Premiership games seems steep, so I wouldn’t go and get his named printed on next season home shirt just yet.
