Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini has emerged as a transfer target for Liverpool, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
The Italian internation defender has been at Juventus since 2005 and he has been a mainstay at the heart of their defence for the 6 years he has been at the club.
With Jamie Carragher’s illustrious career at Liverpool slowly coming to a close, the club know it is time to search for a replacement for the 33 year-old centre-half.
Chiellini’s versatility, as he can also play at left-back, is something that Liverpool are impressed with and they are genuinely interested in bringing the Italian to Anfield.
In the last few years, Chiellini has also cemented his place in the Italian national side and has become their most important defender. The 27 year-old has won 49 caps and he’ll no doubt be in the Italy side that heads into Euro 2012 next summer.
Chiellini was very close to coming to England with Manchester City in 2007 when they had Sven-Goran Eriksson in charge, after the defender fell out with Juventus’ now former Coach, Claudio Ranieri. Juventus pulled out of the deal at the last minute however, as Chiellini reconciled with Ranieri.
The balance that fellow Italian Roberto Mancini has added to the ‘Etihad Offer’ will only serve to add yet another crucial incentive for the cream of Europe to sign up. Many clubs have tried and failed to prize Chiellini away from Juventus in the past and Liverpool will now it will be extremely difficult to force Juventus into selling their star defender.
Chiellini himself this week laughed off reports linking him with a move to Liverpool. Writing on his official Twitter account, Chiellini wrote:
”When I read these things, it really is laughable. They really don’t know what to write.”
