The jubilation of Nottingham Forest’s remarkable FA Cup win over Arsenal last weekend was quickly evaporated from the thoughts of those associated with the City Ground side, after the Reds suffered a disappointing home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday evening.
In new boss Aitor Karanka’s debut, the Reds looked flat and devoid of ideas, and it appears the Spaniard has a massive task on his hands if if he is to turn this Forest side into promotion candidates next season. Fans here in The Transfer Tavern watched the match live upon our big screens, bemoaning their side’s poor passing and lack of desire over the course of the ninety minutes. Our landlord caught up with fans of the East Midlands side whilst collecting glasses at full-time, keen to gauge their thoughts towards the transfer window. Areas of the squad in need of attention were mentioned, but the dream signing fans hope to pull off this month is a permanent deal for Everton loanee, Kieran Dowell.
The 20-year-old has been sensational for the Reds this season, continuing the fine form he exhibited during England U20’s World Cup victory in South Korea in the summer. Since his arrival in the East Midlands however, Dowell’s form has skyrocketed. Eight goals and four assists so far has seen the player evolve into one of the most exciting young stars in the Football League, and Forest must do whatever it takes to secure him to a permanent deal.
Everton are spending big this season, and have already spent nearly £30 million under new boss Sam Allardyce this month. The Toffees are historically famed for affording youngster’s opportunities, with a number of academy graduates regulars in the squad this season. However with Gylfi Sigurdsson the undisputed playmaker at the club, and Wayne Rooney in the number ten role, Dowell may find himself a long way down the pecking order upon his return to Liverpool. If Forest can convince him his long-term future lies at The City Ground, this side could be destined for greatness.
