Liverpool are set to rival Italian table-toppers Juventus in the battle to sign Zenit st. Petersburg and Portuguese centre-back Bruno Alves.
It had been heavily speculated that the Portuguese was destined to be heading to Turin to sign with Juventus, but reports in Italy say that Liverpool have joined the race for £15 million rated Alves.
The Portuguese 29-year-old who will be turning 30 later this month is not getting any younger, but what he would bring to Liverpool despite his experience is his strong, tough tackling and no nonsense defending. He has won many titles for both Porto where he spent the majority of his career and with current club Zenit.
King Kenny is eager to bolster his defence who have at times looked very shaky this season. Bruno Alves may be a tad expensive especially for his age, but he could potentially be a very significant player for Liverpool, noting his ability to lead and dominate from the back, both mentally and psychically.
No official fee has yet to be discussed by neither clubs, but it has been reported that an estimated £15 million could see off interest from Juventus and sway the Russian champions to let the 29-year-old defender leave for Merseyside.
