For the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, it doesn’t get bigger than the Merseyside derby. Though Everton and Liverpool have taken different paths over the last few years, games between the two clubs are often fiery, and always competitive. They’re set to face off on Friday in the highlight fixture of this round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool will be going into the game as favourites, given Everton’s mixed season so far, but Jurgen Klopp cannot take the game lightly. Under Sam Allardyce, the Toffees have enjoyed somewhat of a rebirth, and that’s problematic for Liverpool.
Unfortunately for the club, though, that’s not the only bad news. Indeed, Jurgen Klopp has today delivered an update that is sure to worry our resident Reds. According to Klopp, via the official Liverpool website, the vital duo of Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho are both set to miss the game through injury.
Klopp had previously suggested, again via the official Liverpool website, that the duo were both doubts for the game, but that had left fans feeling optimistic that at least one could make it in time. Now, though, cold water has been poured on those hopes – with Klopp now facing a tough test to replace the pair.
Both have been frequent starters for Liverpool this season, with Salah, in particular, enjoying quite the season. The Egyptian has impressed during his first season back in the Premier League, and he’s currently leading the way in the goalscoring charts in the Premier League. Coutinho, meanwhile, has continued his fine form for the Reds in typical, classy fashion.
The FA Cup could be Liverpool’s main opportunity for silverware this season, given the fact that they are out of the Carabao Cup, so Klopp has a big decision on his hands as he looks to secure a win.
Liverpool have done well this year, but Coutinho and Salah have been the stars of the show. They’re far from a 2-man team, but Everton will take a lot of confidence from this news.
That being said, this will give other players – perhaps including Daniel Sturridge or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – a chance to shine.
