The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have their attention firmly placed on their side’s clash with Sevilla this evening. The Reds have had a decent few weeks, and with a win in this game enough to put them in a very commanding position at the top of their Champions League group, they’re desperate for their side to perform this evening.
A few fans, though, are already turning their attention to a fixture of equal importance – the Reds’ game against Chelsea next weekend. Chelsea have done well in recent weeks, and it’s a game that is sure to test the credentials of both sides. Whilst Jurgen Klopp is no doubt focused on his fixture tonight, his latest news update will have a massive effect on Liverpool’s chances at the weekend too.
Ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Sevilla, Klopp has provided an update on the injury status of Joel Matip.
According to the official Liverpool website, he said: “The squad looks good. They are pretty much all here from the normal squad, apart from Joel [Matip]. He is in Liverpool and full training…He is good. I think there will be a big chance he will be ready for Saturday”.
Matip has, of course, been a big part of Liverpool’s plans this season, and whilst his defensive teammates have often struggled, he has continually delivered good performances this term. His presence in the defence this weekend, then, will be key as the Reds look to take on the likes of Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard.
Whilst Klopp’s message falls short of confirming his impending return to fitness, it’s certainly a positive update.
Matip has been a shining light in an otherwise dim Liverpool defence. He continues to perform, and whilst he hasn’t been immune to mistakes, he’s certainly been a level above his partners at the back.
He’ll be needed this weekend, and so it isn’t worth risking him in Europe.
