Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been hoping Jurgen Klopp will put his knowledge of the Bundesliga to good use ever since his appointment earlier this year and they’re pleased to see their manager has a plan to fix the defence.
The Daily Express states Klopp wants to bring Schalke defender Joel Matip to Anfield on a free transfer next summer, with the Cameroonian international available to discuss a pre-contract agreement in the New Year.
24-year-old Matip’s versatility will appeal to Liverpool, as he can play in a defensive-midfield role as well as in the heart of the defence.
Newcastle United held previous interest with a £10m move in the summer which failed to materialise but Liverpool are prepared to wait until the end of the season, where they can snap-up the highly-rated defender for nothing.
Matip’s arrival next summer could be part of a double signing from Bundesliga giants Schalke, with Klopp also tracking 19-year-old winger Leroy Sane.
Liverpool fans, would Matip make you Premier League contenders? Let us know in the comments below!
