The Liverpool fans were absolutely enthralled in the Transfer Tavern last weekend after their side recorded an emphatic 5-0 victory over Watford at Anfield.
After losing to their top-four rivals Manchester United on the previous weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s side burst out the traps with a point to prove on Saturday, and they certainly made it against the hapless Hornets. Mo Salah was in typically inspired form for The Reds as he notched his first-ever hat-trick for the club before adding a fourth strike for good measure with five minutes left to play.
Liverpool’s return to form was greeted with delight by the resident Reds lining up our bar, as was one of the latest transfer rumours concerning their club’s ambitions for the summer. According to Transfermarktweb, Liverpool are planning on making a bid for Julian Draxler (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) this summer, despite the fact that he still has over 3 years remaining on his current deal.
A move for Draxler would certainly represent a huge statement of intent by Liverpool who are being widely-tipped to mount a title challenge next season. Signing players of Draxler’s quality will undoubtedly aid Liverpool’s desire to go head-to-head with Manchester City for the ultimate prize in English football next season, but the club must bare in mind that his arrival could have a negative impact on the progress of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The Ox endured a tough opening to his Liverpool career after his slightly controversial transfer from Arsenal last summer, but following a difficult beginning to life on Merseyside he has gone from strength to strength and blossomed into a fine player. The majority of Chamberlain’s best performances have come in central-midfield where he can use his all-round technical ability and his stamina to great effect.
Whilst operating as part of a midfield three, Chamberlain is generally the more attacking-minded midfielder of the unit, but considering that is the role in which Draxler typically operates in, first-team opportunities would be harder to come by if Klopp eventually manages to land PSG’s employee. At this moment in time, Oxlade-Chamberlain is slowly developing into a top player who could potentially become a pivotal component of Liverpool’s future success, providing that Klopp continues to hand him opportunities to prove himself in the first-team.
Draxler’s arrival would undoubtedly be a positive signing for the club, but it’s unlikely he will make the switch from Paris to Liverpool unless he has assurances of a regular starting berth. Considering Naby Keita is also moving to the club this summer, Draxler’s arrival would surely serve to deprive Chamberlain of first-team opportunities and therefore stagnate the promising development he has shown this season.Like what the TT have on offer?
