The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their side will secure the signing of a new goalkeeper this summer to finally solve a nagging club problem.
The goalkeeping conundrum has plagued Liverpool in the seasons gone by as Simon Mingolet has consistently proven to be a level below what is required to compete for the Premier League title, and his latest replacement Lorius Karius has left Jurgen Klopp with little choice other than to scout the transfer market for a replacement after his cataclysmic performance in the Champions League final last month.
Roma’s Alisson Becker has been linked with a move to Anfield for almost the entirety of the season so far, but with an extortionate price-tag on his head and no experience of playing in the Premier League to offer Klopp would be wise to turn his attention elsewhere.
Although it would certainly be one of the most dramatic transfers in recent memory, the German manager should target Everton’s Jordan Pickford (valued at £27 million by Transfermarkt) in order to finally put an end to his goalkeeper crisis by securing the services of a reliable long-term number one.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper is widely expected to be England’s number one at the World Cup this summer, and rightly so. Pickford’s form was a notable spark in an otherwise sobering campaign for the Toffees faithful propping up our bar as his commanding presence and excellent shot-stopping ability almost single-handedly earned points for his side throughout the season.
He was eventually handed the Player of the Season award in the process at the end of a fantastic debut season which will surely set the tone for a lengthy and successful career in the top-flight.
However, like any ambitious professional, Pickford will be looking to win trophies within his career, but Everton’s recent history suggests they will only be able to compete for domestic cup competitions in the years to come.
With that in mind, there’s every chance that he could be eventually tempted into a sensational transfer across Merseyside to join Liverpool – even if he is likely to earn the nickname judas in the process.
Pickford has made an extremely promising opening to his career in English football and he is only likely to improve as the years progress, so Klopp should add a further layer of intensity to the Merseyside rivalry by doing everything in his power to sign the England number one to replace Karius.
