Back in 2015, Brendan Rodgers signed a relatively unknown teenage defender named Joe Gomez. Just a few short months later, he suffered a significant knee injury – and he was largely forgotten.
However, fast forward three years, and Gomez is now the star of an ever-improving Liverpool defence, and he’s set to remain there for years to come – owing to his latest contract agreement with the club.
It’s been a steady and impressive rise from Gomez, and it highlights the decision that Brendan Rodgers made when he chose to sign the talented young defender.
So far, Jurgen Klopp hasn’t been able to replicate that, as he’s yet to really maximise the talent that is available down in the lower divisions of English football – namely the Championship and League One.
Clearly, given the quality that Gomez offers, this is something that he should be looking to change, and fortunately, there are a handful of young talents that could prove to be just as successful as Rodgers’ move for Gomez.
With that said, Klopp should target these 2 starlets to replicate Rodgers’ Liverpool success with Joe Gomez…
Ezri Konsa is an interesting player to consider, given that he – like Gomez – started his career at Charlton. He has since, however, moved to Brentford – and he’s enjoying a fantastic season.
He’s started 20 Championship games this season, which highlights his importance to the Bees.
A ball-playing defender, the 21-year-old has bags of passing ability, meaning that he’d fit right in at Anfield. Furthermore, he’s tremendously consistent at the back, and he’s hardly put a foot wrong all season long.
He’s not quite as towering as someone like Virgil van Dijk, and he could do with further development in terms of his physical frame, but in terms of potential, he’s right up there with some of England’s most talented young defenders.
Leeds man Jack Clarke is yet to start a Championship game, but he’s made 6 substitute appearances this season, and at just 18-years-old, that says a lot about how highly-rated he is at Elland Road.
The talented attacker has been getting a good taste of the action this term, and it’s evident that Bielsa rates him very highly indeed.
He’s got bags of technical ability, pace and energy, whilst he’s also always capable of finding a gap or a bit of space.
Clarke has already notched up his first assist of the season, and we’re expecting many more to come. The attacker is destined for big things.
