Klopp the key factor as Liverpool edge closer to securing summer arrival – report

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the summer transfer window. It’s been an exciting year or so for the Reds on the transfer front, with big names like Mohammed Salah and Virgil van Dijk both moving to Anfield.

There’s also the impending arrival of Naby Keita, who agreed a deal to move to Anfield this summer during the lead-up to the 2017/18 campaign.

Indeed, this summer period could be the most exciting yet, particularly with the talk that another massive signing could be on the way.

According to the Mirror, Liverpool are closing in on a £40 million move for Jack Butland, with the Englishman reportedly keen to have the opportunity to play under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Liverpool are, of course, expected to bring in a new goalkeeper this summer, given that neither Loris Karius or Simon Mignolet has been able to cover themselves in glory over the last year or so. Karius is currently Klopp’s first choice, and he has looked good, but as we’ve seen before, the German’s consistency is a real concern.

A move for Butland, then, makes sense. The Englishman is proven in the Premier League, and so it’s fair to say that Klopp wouldn’t need to have much concern over his ability.

Stoke, though, will be hesitant to let him go, and so this move is far from a done deal.

Landlord’s Verdict

Butland is a top-class keeper, and significantly, as an English player, he would fall under the homegrown rules that are quickly becoming problematic for top Premier League teams.

Also, at just 25-years-old, he has years ahead of him to both develop and maintain his position between the sticks, and so he’d be a great long-term solution for the Reds.

Though a deal is said to be close, it’s tough to see Stoke agreeing to a summer departure prior to the end of the season, so it’s going to be an interesting few months for the Reds. That said, if Liverpool pay up, the Potters may be unable to refuse.
