The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern weren’t sure about Jurgen Klopp’s decision to make Lorius Karius his first choice goalkeeper earlier in the season. The German had done little to impress since moving to Anfield, and whilst Simon Mignolet was seriously struggling, the decision to replace him was very divisive.
However, fast forward a few months, and it’s fair to say that the decision to plant Karius as Liverpool’s first choice goalkeeper has gone down as one of the best Liverpool-related decisions in recent memory.
It’s no surprise that the Reds’ upturn in form has come as Karius has got more and more comfortable. Earlier in the year, Liverpool were seriously lacking stability. There were constant changes at the back, both in the defence and between the sticks, and that only hurt their ambitions in the Premier League. Of course, many problems were solved by the arrival of Virgil van Dijk, but there is no doubting that Karius has played an equally, if not bigger, part in the turnaround of the Reds.
The German’s highlight package this season is already several minutes long, with a few remarkable saves really beginning to indicate that his potential is limitless. Bringing brilliant agility, shot-stopping and aerial prowess, the German has taken Liverpool to the next level.
Stability, particularly in goal, is not to be undervalued. The impact that having a solid goalkeeper can have on defences is huge, and the confidence that he has bestowed upon his teammates has, undoubtedly, had a huge impact.
What’s more, the German is only going to get better as he continues to perform. Klopp’s decision was clearly one with long-term planning in mind. He certainly wasn’t expecting Karius to be as good as he has this season, with more of an eye on next term, and so the prospect of him getting even better will come as music to his ears.
It seemed inevitable that Liverpool would have to spend big to fix what was undeniably a huge problem in goal, but Karius has made that need reduce significantly, and so the financial implications of his rise could be remarkable too.
Indeed, Liverpool had a major problem between the sticks, and Klopp’s move to insert Karius back into the fold will undoubtedly go down as a huge one, particularly if they achieve European success.
