Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern have once again been left underwhelmed by their side after seeing the Toffees go down 2-1 at home to Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday, leaving their European qualification dreams in tatters.
Ronald Koeman’s men went into their clash with the French club having picked up just one point from their opening two group games, and gave themselves a mountain to climb early on when Mason Holgate gave away a sixth minute penalty, from which Nabil Fekir slotted home the spot-kick. And although Ashley Williams did level proceedings for the hosts after 69 minutes, they were unable to take a point from the encounter as Bertrand Traore poked home past Jordan Pickford six minutes later to seal the win for Lyon.
Unsurprisingly, Everton boss Koeman has come under even greater pressure from several of our resident Toffees fans, and they may be intrigued by recent comments from the Dutchman (via The Liverpool Echo) with regard to summer signing Davy Klaassen.
The 24-year-old made the move to Goodison Park during the summer but has so far struggled to replicate his fine Ajax form in England, having yet to score or lay on an assist in 11 appearances for the Toffees.
And the Netherlands international struggled once again last night against Lyon, and Koeman spoke out about the midfielder’s overall difficulties at Everton after the game.
He said: ‘The situation of Klaassen is really difficult.
‘I know, I was a good player but I had several moments struggling. You are struggling with your confidence. You take wrong decisions.
‘He had one shot tonight but it was an open pass to Dominic and it’s one v one on the goalkeeper.’
These comments are sure to intrigue Everton fans up and down the country, with Klaassen clearly suffering from a crisis of confidence at present, which is hardly going to have improved having been hauled off at half time on Thursday.
Yet whether our resident Toffees supporters get to see the best of the Dutchman in the coming weeks very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: As with many of Everton’s summer signings, there was much optimism surrounding the arrival of Davy Klaassen, but there has been nothing so far which warrants that positivity.
The Netherlands international has failed to score or lay on an assist in 11 appearances for the Toffees this term, and was brought off at half time by manager Ronald Koeman against Lyon on Thursday night to underline his struggles.
Koeman alluded to these difficulties in the press after the game, but it is now up to him to reinstall that confidence in the 24-year-old, especially as Everton and indeed Koeman are in need of Klaassen’s quality on the field to get them out of this rut.
