Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern were left to rue another disappointing European night after seeing their side only draw 2-2 at home to Apollon Limassol on Thursday.
Ronald Koeman’s men got back to winning ways in the Premier League over the weekend after edging past Bournemouth 2-1 at Goodison Park, and they would have hoped to take that confidence into Thursday’s Europa League clash with the Cypriot side.
Yet they had to settle for a share of the spoils in what was another frustrating evening for several of our resident Evertonians, although they may be encouraged by recent quotes from manager Koeman with regard to Sunday’s game against Burnley.
And that’s because the Dutchman has confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Oumar Niasse, scorer of both goals in the win over Eddie Howe’s Cherries last weekend, will be involved against the Clarets.
The 27-year-old was out in the wilderness at Everton before returning for their Carabao Cup clash against Sunderland last week, in which he scored an impressive third to remind everyone of his capabilities in front of goal.
And the Senegal international took his Premier League chance last weekend as well by coming off the bench and netting a crucial double for the Toffees, in turn helping them register their first league win since the opening day.
And Koeman’s recent comments suggest that he is set to get another opportunity to showcase his talents in the Premier League, saying: ‘He will be part of our team on Sunday.
‘He’s playing out of confidence and scoring goals.’
And these comments are sure to intrigue our resident Evertonians, given that Niasse is one of only two men, the other being Wayne Rooney, to have netted in the Premier League for the Toffees this season.
Landlord’s verdict: Oumar Niasse deserves immense credit for not giving up on his career at Everton, despite it looking for all the world like it was over before it had even started.
But the 27-year-old has proven his worth in recent weeks with three goals in two substitute cameos, one against Sunderland and two against Bournemouth, and as such he looks set to be rewarded by being included in the matchday squad for the visit of Burnley on Sunday.
Manager Ronald Koeman is under pressure to get results, and with the striking options limited at Goodison Park, and Niasse having already bagged this season, playing the Senegal star could be exactly what is needed to get a result on Sunday, and indeed save the Dutchman from even greater scrutiny.
