According to Spanish outlet Marca, via Sports Mole, Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny is being linked with Spanish giants Barcelona, due to an injury crisis with the Catalan club.
The La Liga leaders are struggling for defenders at the moment, with Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen injured, and are wanting to offer the defender a six month contract with an option to add another year.
The French defender has not featured for Arsenal this season, after sustaining an achilles injury in the Europa League semi-final last season against Atlético Madrid, and subsequently missed his country’s World Cup triumph. New manager Unai Emery bolstered The Gunners’ defence over the summer, and this may mean that the centre-back may struggle to make the team when he returns.
Now at 33 years old, Koscielny’s playing days are reaching an end. Therefore, this would be a brilliant swansong in his career. Arsenal are in the Europa League this season, and aren’t amongst the favourites to win the Premier League at this moment in time. On the other hand, Barcelona are in rampant form this season, firm favourites to win La Liga with Real Madrid underperforming, as well as being strong contenders for the Champions League.
This, therefore, would be a chance for the French defender to earn some silverware before he hangs up his boots. At this point in the season, there aren’t many more clubs in Europe that can guarantee silverware more than Barcelona. As he doesn’t look that popular this year at Arsenal, Koscielny should move to a club that wants him, luckily for him that is Ernesto Valverde’s men.
