Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing with the latest developments coming from the Emirates – Arsene Wenger’s successor has been found.
Former PSG boss Unai Emery emerged as a late contender for the job despite Mikel Arteta remaining as the favourite to take over, but the club opted to appoint the three-time Europa League winner instead of their former captain. The 46-year-old has huge boots to fill and a mammoth task on his hands if he is to return Arsenal to the top of the Premier League. With the transfer window open, his work starts immediately.
With key centre-back Laurent Koscielny sidelined for six months due to injury, Emery must make signing a new long-term replacement a priority this summer. In fact, the Frenchman is probably past it at the highest level right now, sadly enough. The Gunners have been linked with Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Kostas Manolas but should instead target Bayer Leverkusen defender – Jonathan Tah.
He made his Bundesliga debut aged just 17 and has matured into one of the division’s finest defenders. Tah made 28 appearances in the league for Leverkusen and is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt. The German is one of Europe’s hottest prospects, and it’s easy to see why.
A colossal defender, Tah is physical, strong but also quick making him a nightmare to play against. He is excellent in a tackle, with an astonishing 85% tackle success rate in the Bundesliga according to WhoScored. As well as this, the 22-year-old has retained an 89% pass completion highlighting his ability to start moves from the back.
Signing Tah would be Arsenal’s best signing for years.
