Sami Mokbel from Mail Online has arrived in the Football Transfer Tavern with news that Arsenal fans have been waiting for after confirming that the club have made a record £22 million bid to sign Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain.
Mokbel explains that the Argentine star has already privately agreed terms with the Emirates Stadium outfit and the deal is now just dependent on the two clubs agreeing a fee for the 25-year-old striker.
Real Madrid have made it clear that Higuain is free to leave the Bernabeu this summer and the forward has indicated that he is very interested in a switch to the Premier League.
Arsene Wenger has been a long-time admirer of Higuain and even tried to sign him in 2006 before he joined Real Madrid. It now looks likely that the former River Plate man will smash the current transfer record of £15 million that the Gunners paid Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin in 2009 while also becoming their highest paid player on £150,000-a-week.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are thought to be heading the queue for impressive Spain Under-21 international Asier Illarramendi (pictured), who has been in outstanding form during Spain’s recent European Under-21 Championship success.
The £10 million-rated Real Sociedad defensive midfielder could be in line for a move to the Emirates Stadium with Arsene Wenger keeping a watchful eye this summer.
