Landing 46-year-old to replace Conte would be Abramovich’s best decison since 2003

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are ready for change at Stamford Bridge this summer. The Blues have struggled this season, and Antonio Conte, in particular, has been very poor.

Bizarre decisions, a downturn in mood and constant uncertainty over his future, the Italian has seemingly been as frustrated as fans – and that’s a problem for the Blues.

Whether he quits Stamford Bridge, is sacked by the club, or indeed if he stays, it will come as no surprise to hear that Chelsea are reportedly considering potential replacements – with Mauricio Pochettino an apparent target according to Sky Sports.

A hugely surprising choice, a move for Pochettino would come out of left-field, but it could end up being Roman Abramovich’s best decision since his arrival back in 2003.

After all, Pochettino has enjoyed a brilliant few years at Tottenham. He’s turned them from a team that regularly competed in the Europa League into a European force – with a club now a regular in the Champions League. He’s also regularly put in significant title challenges, with the Lilywhites impressing amidst a league of big spenders. That’s what makes his job so impressive – he’s done all of that with such a limited budget. At Chelsea, then, backed by Roman Abramovich’s big spenders, he could be even better.

You also have to look towards his fantastic ability to develop young players. Chelsea have invested hugely in their developmental academy, and it has yet to bear much fruit. That would likely change with Pochettino at the helm, given that he’s been brilliant at giving chances to the likes of Harry Winks and Dele Alli at Spurs. A move for Pochettino by Abramovich would stand out in that it would represent long-term planning, and that hasn’t been seen at Stamford Bridge since the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas. In Pochettino, though, the Blues would undoubtedly have a better option.

In truth, a move for Pochettino ticks all the boxes for Chelsea, and if Abramovich can get the deal done, it would be huge for the Blues.
