Landing £54m-rated star would be Man United’s best signing since Vidic

The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking ahead to the future to identify ways in which their club can improve in the summer window.

By Manchester United’s immensely high standards, it’s been a poor season so far, but an FA Cup victory and a 2nd place finish should still be regarded as relatively successful considering the extent of Manchester City’s dominance this season.

The resident Red Devils propping up our bar have been bemoaning the standard of their squad this season, and they firmly believe the acquisition of a handful of quality players will be necessary next season in order to bridge the gulf in class between themselves and their local-rivals next season.

Although United have spent plenty of money on centre-backs in recent years such as Eric Bailly and Victor Lindeloff, it seems to be an area which requires further improvement this summer. With that being said, Mourinho should pursue a transfer for FC Barcelona’s highly-regarded French defender, namely Samuel Umtiti (valued at £54 million by Transfermarkt) in the summer.

According to recent reports, United are interested in bringing him to Old Trafford during the next transfer window, and he should be available due to his release clause of £54 million which is written into his contract. Umtiti has spent almost 2 years with the Catalan giants since signing from Lyon in the summer of 2016, and during his career with the club he has rapidly established himself as one of the most complete defenders on the continent.

Umtiti is not the tallest centre-back, but what he lacks in height he more than makes up for in pace, intelligence and technicality. At just 24-years-old, he has plenty of his best years ahead of him, so if United were to secure his services they would be making a worthwhile long-term investment.

United have not managed to replace the formidable partnership of Vidic and Ferdinand in recent years, and their failure to do so has been a core reason for the clubs struggle to reach the heights they reached under Sir Alex Ferguson.

If United want to usurp their local-rivals and become the dominating force in English football once again, they will need to bring at least one defender of genuine quality to the club this summer, so they should do everything they can to convince Umtiti to swap Catalonia for Manchester this summer.
