Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have once again been bemoaning their side’s inability to defend after seeing the Merseyside giants let slip a three-goal lead to only draw 3-3 against Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night, thus making them wait to book their place in the knockout stages.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the La Liga outfit off the back of four straight victories, and they looked on course for a fifth as a brace from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane’s fourth of the season sent them into a commanding 3-0 lead at half time. However, things went very wrong indeed for the Reds after the break as a Wissam Ben Yedder brace alongside a 93rd minute strike from Guido Pizarro secured a point for the Spanish side, thus leaving Liverpool on the verge of qualification, but not mathematically into the last 16.
Consequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are turning their attentions to Saturday’s huge Premier League clash against champions Chelsea at Anfield.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Liverpool fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them with a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Julian Draxler.
The 24-year-old only moved to the Parc des Princes back in January but has fallen foul of the club’s big summer spending, making just nine starts for Unai Emery’s side so far this term.
And reports suggest that Klopp and Liverpool are interested in bringing the Germany international to Anfield in January, in a move which could well instigate another key deal at Anfield, namely that of penning Emre Can down to a new contract.
And that’s because landing Draxler would underline the ambition of Liverpool, and thus could well convince the 23-year-old to lower his demands to be a part of a bright future at Anfield.
Ultimately, Draxler has proven in the last few years to be a quality forward who scores and creates lots of goals – he’s even shown an adeptness at playing in the centre of midfield such are PSG’s incredible attacking options.
And when one puts him into the Liverpool side, it can only strengthen it, especially if Philippe Coutinho were to leave Anfield in January amid speculation from Barcelona.
And when one considers that Draxler is only 24, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane 25, and Roberto Firmino 26, as well as a whole host of other young players, the future is extremely bright at Liverpool under manager Klopp.
Yes, there are question marks over their defensive capabilities, but going forward they are one of the most exciting teams in the country, and look set to again challenge for the top four this season, and could well go on a run in the Champions League.
And Can must be aware of the potential of the football club.
He, at the age of 23, could play a huge part in the future of the Reds over the coming years, and the fact that he is a regular under Klopp is significant as, if he were to move, he wouldn’t necessarily be guaranteed that at another side.
But, importantly, landing a player of Draxler’s quality, not to mention the fact that he is a compatriot of Can’s, could well convince the midfielder that Liverpool is the place to be, and thus to sign a fresh deal at the club.
