Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side head into the international break third in the Premier League table, and having booked their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League by beating holders Real Madrid.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men may well have lost to Manchester United little over a fortnight ago but they soon bounced back by comfortably dispatching Zinedine Zidane’s Real 3-1 at Wembley a few days later, a result which saw them progress into the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 2011. And although they then produced a below-par performance against Crystal Palace five days later, they did get the three points thanks to Son Heung-min’s wonderful second half strike, which in turn moved them level on points with second place United in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been many happy Spurs fans in the Tavern this week and several of them are eagerly anticipating the return to league action this weekend, which sees their team take on North London rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium hoping to continue their decent run of form.
In the meantime though, there is plenty for our resident Tottenham supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Pochettino’s side with a move for Watford sensation Richarlison.
The 20-year-old only moved to Vicarage Road during the summer but has been an absolute revelation, scoring four goals and laying on three assists in just 11 Premier League appearances for Marco Silva’s Hornets, thus helping them to eighth place in the table.
And his wonderful start to life in England has reportedly attracted the interest of Pochettino and Tottenham, which is a move that, if it does indeed go ahead, could spell the end of Georges-Kevin N’Koudou’s time at Spurs.
The 22-year-old winger moved to the North London outfit back in 2016 but has failed to make a meaningful impact at the club, making just 21 first team appearances for Tottenham, only two of which have been starts.
And with just one minute of Premier League action so far this season, this term looks set to follow a similar trend for the Frenchman, and bringing Richarlison in is only going to push him further down the pecking order as the duo will be competing for a similar position on the pitch.
And with Richarlison having proven his worth in the early stages of his Premier League career, thus demonstrating an adaptation and familiarity with the division, it’s difficult to see how N’Koudou can command regular football ahead of him.
Ten league starts to zero, four league goals to zero, and a duo who play down the left flank – it’s not looking good for N’Koudou.
He himself may well have been left frustrated given that Spurs rarely play with wingers, with wing-backs seemingly Pochettino’s preferred avenue, but to then not be the first-choice left winger at the football club would surely end his chances of regular football. Add a returning Erik Lamela back into the equation, and the future looks bleak for the Frenchman.
And with Richarlison adding greater versatility, given that he has played centre-forward, down the right, and slightly deeper during his career to date, landing him would surely force £6.3 million-rated N’Koudou (as per Transfermarkt) to consider a future away from Tottenham.
