Tottenham supporters have been slightly more upbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side get back to winning ways with a 3-0 success over Apoel Nicosia in their final Champions League group match on Wednesday, which rounded off a stunning campaign for the North London outfit.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men have struggled domestically in recent times, having won just one of their last six Premier League games, yet they stormed Group H by winning five of their six matches, thus finishing ahead of champions Real Madrid and 2013 runners-up Borussia Dortmund. And they the group stages off in style with a comfortable victory on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Fernando Llorente, Son Heung-min, and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, a result which saw them end up with 16 points from their group games, more than any other side in the competition.
Subsequently, there have been several happy Spurs fans in the Tavern in the last few hours, many of whom are hoping that they can translate their European form into the Premier League sooner rather than later, ideally against Stoke City at Wembley on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Tottenham supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that they will reignite their interest in AC Milan attacker Suso in January.
The 24-year-old has hugely impressed at the San Siro since making the move from Liverpool back in 2015, and reportedly attracted the attention of Pochettino’s men over the summer, only for no deal to materialise.
Yet Spurs are reportedly seeking to resurrect a deal for the Spain international in the New Year, a move which could spell the end of Moussa Sissoko’s time at the North London outfit.
Ultimately, although this season has been slightly better, things haven’t worked out for the France international at Tottenham.
The 28-year-old may well have made 34 appearances for Pochettino’s side last season, but only 12 of those were starts, and although it has widely been noted that the midfielder’s form has been better this term, he still only has eight Premier League starts to his name.
Yet, one senses that when the likes of Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama are back to full fitness and playing regularly, Sissoko will once again be consigned to a space on the substitute’s bench, as he is not good enough consistently to threaten the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen for their places in the side.
Contrast that to a young, hungry Suso, who has proven his worth in Milan in the last two years and has excelled in a variety of different positions, and one senses that Sissoko will be pushed even further down the pecking order, and possibly out of the football club altogether.
Yes, his form has been better this season, but he’s still way down in the pecking order, and Suso would surely move above him were he to move to North London in January.
Thus, with a World Cup approaching as well, the £18 million-rated Sissoko (as per Transfermarkt) could well seek a move away from Tottenham in January.
