Newcastle United supporters have been somewhat frustrated in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side concede twice in the last ten minutes to only end up drawing 2-2 with fellow Premier League strugglers Bournemouth on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Cherries off the back of beating Manchester United in their preceding league encounter, a result which saw them end a barren home run of no wins in eight at St James’ Park. And the Magpies took that momentum into their encounter at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday as a first half brace from Dwight Gayle set them on their way to all three points, only for late goals from Adam Smith and Dan Gosling to preserve a point for Eddie Howe’s side.
Thus, there have been several frustrated Newcastle fans in the Tavern in the last few days, many of whom are bemoaning their side’s inability to see out matches given they have led each of their last four Premier League matches, but have only gone on to win one of them.
In the meantime though, the summer transfer window has been on the lips of many of our resident Magpies supporters in the last few days, and indeed who their side must look to sign should they remain in the top-flight this season.
And with West Brom seemingly consigned to relegation after Saturday’s home defeat to Huddersfield Town, a raid on the Hawthorns could be in the offing, with many hoping to see striker Salomon Rondon at St James’ Park next season.
And the Venezuela international is exactly the sort of striker Benitez seems to want leading the line in his side, and while he hasn’t found the net often this term, his previous seasons in the top-flight suggest that he has the all round qualities to take Newcastle to the next level.
Ultimately, the current striking options at St James’ Park leave a lot to be desired, with Joselu regularly leading the line but clearly not the goal-scorer required at this level, while fellow attacker Gayle is capable of bagging the goals, as seen on Saturday, yet some doubts still remain over his all round abilities as a lone forward.
And while Rondon isn’t as prolific as Gayle in front of goal, he has been able to combine the role of a target man and all round centre forward by hitting the back of net, scoring eight times for the Baggies last season, and ten the campaign before.
Those aren’t ground-breaking figures by any means, but in comparison to Joselu’s best Premier League tally of four, alongside what Rondon would offer the team at the top end of the pitch, the 28-year-old is without doubt an upgrade on the Spaniard, and the sort of forward Benitez is likely to want in his side going into next season, should they indeed remain in the Premier League.
And with West Brom seemingly on their way down to the Championship, the Magpies may fancy their chances of luring the £11.7 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) away from the Hawthorns, and potentially for a cut-price deal as well.
And given what Rondon would offer the North East giants, it’s a deal they must seek to strike over the summer.
