For the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern, Mousa Dembele is amongst their most important players. Though no longer the youngster that he once was, the midfield veteran has continued to impress through the midfield, much to the joy of our resident Lilywhites.
However, given how fast moving football is, and given the fact that Dembele is already 30-years-old, it makes sense for Tottenham to plan for the future.
As such, bringing in a new midfielder this summer would be logical, and our landlord thinks that Andre Gomes, who is rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt, would be the perfect acquisition.
The Portuguese player hasn’t had an easy time of it since moving to Barcelona, but the fact remains that he is one of Europe’s most impressive midfielders. He was the star for his national team when they stormed to victory at Euro 2016, and whilst he hasn’t been able to keep that form going, it’s clearly still bottled up inside of him – and Mauricio Pochettino could be the man to bring it out of him.
A brilliant passer of the ball, Gomes excels when he is given time to pass and move in the heart of the midfield, much like Dembele. He lacks the physical presence of Dembele, but he more than makes up for that with his technical brilliance. Able to pass balls across field at a perfect pace, he’d be a fantastic creator for the Lilywhites. He’s also a decent threat in the air, which adds another string to his bow.
Mauricio Pochettino has often been able to develop players quickly and efficiently, and if he gets his hands on Gomes, the same story could be told. He is, after all, just 24-years-old, and a step down to Spurs may be what he needs to get the pressure off of his back. He could be a bargain signing, and Tottenham could reap massive rewards.
