The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted when Virgil van Dijk swapped Southampton for Anfield in January. The Reds needed a new central defender, and Jurgen Klopp was duly awarded with one of Europe’s best.
However, Liverpool still have problems at the back, and another new central defender could yet be needed. Indeed, you could even argue that Klopp’s deficiencies at centre-half have been the difference between his top-four challenge and a potential title challenge.
Fortunately, there are many top defenders currently plying their trade in Europe that Klopp could look at.
One player that could be perfect is Salif Sane (rated at £14.4 million by Transfer Markt), who currently plays for Hannover 96.
The 27-year-old has continually proved this season that he is amongst the best players in Germany, and whilst many were expecting his fine form to slow down somewhat, he has only gotten better in recent months.
Standing at a towering 6ft4, the Senegalese is a real unit in the air, and so the prospect of him partnering the force that is Virgil van Dijk would make for a terrifying proposition for both opposition defenders and attackers from set pieces.
A brilliant tackler, he also isn’t afraid to get stuck in, and that has been evidenced by his fine form for his club this term. He’s also brilliant at intercepting the ball, with the mental side of his game just as good as the physical side.
In truth, based on his form this term, Sane is amongst Europe’s best, and his relatively low market value of £14.4 million makes him the perfect signing. If they bring him in and partner him with van Dijk, Liverpool’s defence – which is the thing that has held them back this season – will be transformed, and a title challenge could loom next season.
