Newcastle United supporters have been pretty deflated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side go down 3-1 at Premier League table-toppers Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the runaway leaders off the back of two wins and a draw to start 2018, with victories over Stoke City and Luton Town as well as a draw against Swansea City giving our resident Magpies some confidence ahead of the rest of the campaign. However, their side were unable to maintain their unbeaten start to the year on Saturday as a Sergio Aguero hat-trick inspired the Citizens to all three points, with Jacob Murphy’s second half strike proving to be nothing more than a consolation for the North East giants.
Consequently, there have been some despondent Newcastle supporters in the Tavern this week, many of whom are sincerely hoping that their side can get the players through the door needed to move away from the Premier League’s bottom three in the coming months.
And they may be intrigued by recent reports linking them with a loan move for Borussia Dortmund forward Andre Schurrle, who has seriously struggled for minutes at the Bundesliga outfit with just ten games to show for the first six months of the season.
As such, the Germany World Cup winner could well be on his way back to the English top-flight this month, with both Newcastle and Stoke reportedly keen, in a move which if the Magpies were to get it done could well help convince manager Benitez to remain in charge at St James’ Park.
The Spaniard was reportedly close to quitting from his role as boss at the end of the summer window such were his side’s inability to land key transfer targets, and given they have yet to land anyone in the first 22 days of this window, there are fears among our resident Magpies fans that he could walk in the near future.
Yet getting a deal over the line for Schurrle, regardless of whether it’s a loan or permanent one, may play a part in convincing him to stay, as the 27-year-old would surely represent the sort of quality Benitez is striving to bring to the club in their bid to stay up.
The forward may not have been at Chelsea overly long, but he still managed a decent return of 14 goals in 65 games for the club, including eight in his one and only full season in the Premier League.
And when one takes a look at the current options at Benitez’s disposal in those attacking areas, Schurrle would be an upgrade on the majority of them, and unlike some players they have been linked with in recent times, he has proven his worth in English football before, if not for very long.
Ultimately, January is a notoriously difficult month to get genuine quality through the door, but this would certainly be an exception – there’s little doubt that Schurrle would improve this Newcastle side, and thus improve their survival chances.
And knowing that he can bring in players like the 27-year-old, who has a World Cup winners medal, a Premier League winners medal as well as other domestic cup successes on his CV, would surely be of delight to Benitez, and could well help convince him to remain in charge.
One deal is unlikely to completely sway his feelings towards the Magpies hierarchy, but bringing in someone like Schurrle would surely help that – it may even open the door for similar signings to follow.
As such, getting a deal done for the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) could play a huge part, not only in their battle to avoid the drop, but also the future of manager Benitez.
