The future of Toby Alderweireld is a real concern for the Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern, with the Belgian still yet to sign a new deal. Indeed, reports from the Mirror earlier this week even suggested that a replacement has been identified – with Jonathan Tah reportedly being scouted.
He’s a player that our landlord would love to see in England, and he has even touted him as the perfect replacement for Alderweireld.
Though a pretty unknown name in England, the German international – who is rated at £22.5 million by Transfer Markt – has been slowly building up his reputation on the continent. He’s a regular for Bayer Leverkusen, despite his relative youth, having made 21 league starts so far this term – and so he already has bags of experience. He also has a few international caps under his belt, both at senior and developmental levels, and so he’s clearly highly-rated over in Germany.
As noted, he is a young player – just 22-years-old – and so he fits right into the age-range that Mauricio Pochettino tends to move for. Whilst he’s clearly talented and able to do a job now, he’s also got bags of potential – meaning that Pochettino could turn him into a player that is every bit as good, if not better, than Alderweireld.
In terms of what he can do, he does share a few parallels with the aforementioned Belgian. At a towering 6ft3, the 22-year-old is a real unit in the air, whilst he’s also more than capable with the ball at his feet. As with any top central defender, he’s also more than comfortable making a solid tackle, and he’s got a decent range of passing, too.
He’s far from the complete article, but if Tottenham are looking for a ready-made long-term solution, they should look no further. Indeed, when you throw in his current quality, skill ceiling, age and Tottenham’s needs – this could prove to be Daniel Levy’s best deal in years if he’s able to pull it off.
