Manchester United

Landing this £22.5m-rated youngster will ensure Tottenham finish above Man United next season

The Tottenham fans have been delighted by their side’s improvement since the end of 2017, but they are hoping to produce a more consistent run of form throughout the entirety of the next campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are moving into the business end of the season in a positive run of form, and the resident Lilywhites propping up our bar are hoping it will lead to a top-four finish and a place in the final of the Champions League. Of course, their league ambitions are much more realistic than their European goal, but a victory over Juventus at Wembley next week would certainly add some genuine credibility to their dream of reaching the final in Kiev.

However, according to the Daily Telegraph, the club are already making plans for next season by pursuing the signature of Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt). The report claims that Spurs are willing to pay up to £35 million for the highly-regarded 17-year-old, although they face strong competition from Manchester United for his signature.

On the evidence of Sessegnon’s form for The Cottagers this season, there is little doubt that he is ready for a step up in class from the Championship to the Premier League, despite his age. Whilst alternating between roles at both left-back and left-midfield, Sessegnon has notched 13 goals and claimed 4 assists from 34 appearances this season – a staggering truly record for a 17-year-old wide player.

Tottenham’s interest in Sessegnon is far from surprising due to his long-term potential to succeed at the club, and if they can beat United to his signature it might just enable them to finish above The Red Devils in the league next season. At this moment in time, there appears to be no other left-footed player quite like Sessegnon in the market, and considering United are short of left-footed options at both left-back and left-midfield, their failure to sign him could restrict their progress next season.

Pochettino is in a similar position to Mourinho, as he only has right-footed players available to play in a left-sided midfield role, so Sessegnon’s arrival would bring a completely new fresh dynamic to Tottenham’s midfield. Whoever wins the race for one of the most sought-after wonderkids in European football would reap plenty of rewards over the course of the season, so the outcome of this battle between United and Tottenham will undoubtedly shape the final Premier League table next season.
