The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are feeling rather excited at present. The Lilywhites have been linked with a move for German attacker Marco Reus over the last few days, and that's certainly gone down well amongst fans.

After all, the German is one of Europe's most highly-rated players - and so it's only natural that his potential signing would generate excitement.

Nonetheless, our landlord isn't buying into the hype, and whilst he isn't sure a deal would be found anyway, he thinks that it would be a huge mistake for Tottenham to make any attempt at landing him.

After all, you only have to look at his injury record to recognise that this would be a prime example of throwing money down the drain. He has played just 4 times in the Bundesliga this season, whilst he made just 16 starts last year. The German has been as well known for his injury record as he has for his quality on the ball, and that says all you need to know. Not to mention, at 28-years-old, those problems are only going to worsen.

You also have to consider what Tottenham really need right now. They brought in Lucas Moura over the summer, and with the addition of the Brazilian, there isn't really much room for other attackers. Between the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela and Moura - Reus would certainly not be a guaranteed starter.

He's rated at £25.2 million by Transfer Markt, but it's fair to say that Borussia Dortmund would likely demand more than that - despite his current contract status (one year left on his current deal) - and so the financial merits of this deal are hard to recognise too. Sure, a free deal next summer could be an option - but the contract demands would be huge too.

In truth, no part of this deal really makes sense. He isn't what Tottenham need, and he isn't a clear upgrade. Pochettino needs to avoid this one - agreed?
