Southampton fans here in the Tavern will be hoping that their side can improve next season, as they narrowly escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth.
Indeed, the Saints looked less than convincing this season as they flirted with the possibility of relegation for large parts. However, with plenty of time to improve over the course of the summer transfer window, supporters will be hoping for a successful season next time round.
Sadly, Southampton will need to dip into the transfer market for an attacking player this summer after struggling for creativity at times, with many of our local residents enjoying flashbacks of Matt Le Tissier’s time at the club.
The 49-year-old established himself as arguably the best attacking player that Southampton has ever had at the club, with over 100 goals to his name. And, it’s fair to say that the Saints didn’t enjoy the best of seasons in front of goal last time out, so supporters will be desperate to see an attacking midfielder brought in this summer to try and replicate Le Tissier’s magic.
With that being said, landing this attacking midfielder would surely give Southampton fans Le Tissier flashbacks…
Josip Ilicic, who is valued at £9 million (by Transfermarkt), signed for Italian side Atalanta last summer and managed to score an impressive 15 goals and provided 10 assists for his teammates this season.
The 30-year-old operates as an attacking midfielder that likes to get forward and score goals, very similar to the style that Matt Le Tissier used to adopt during his Southampton days.
Most importantly, the Slovenian international can guarantee you goals and assists, which are two areas that the Saints struggled in last season after signing the ineffective Guido Carrillo.
