Leeds United supporters have been somewhat quieter in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their side suffer a second successive Championship defeat on Saturday, going down 4-3 at home to Millwall in a thrilling encounter at Elland Road.
Thomas Christiansen’s men went into their clash with the Lions off the back of losing 1-0 away at Ipswich Town, yet unbeaten in each of their last five matches at home. However, Neil Harris’ side came from 2-0 down and 3-2 behind to secure all three points from their visit to Yorkshire on Saturday, with Jed Wallace’s strike in the second minute of added time enough to see off the Whites, who subsequently slipped to tenth place in the Championship table and three points off the play-offs.
As such, there have been many despondent Leeds fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom are hoping that their team can bring in reinforcements in the last knockings of the transfer window in a bid to resurrect their promotion push.
And one man who they must target is Everton’s Ademola Lookman, who has recently been linked with a move away from Goodison Park given his lack of first team football for the Premier League club this season.
And Leeds must do all they can to bring the supremely talented winger to Elland Road in the final few days of the window, as doing so could well power them to promotion come the end of the season.
Ultimately, head coach Christiansen won’t want a repeat of what happened last term, what with Leeds looking almost certain for a play-off spot, only to win just five of their last 17 matches to surrender a spot in the top six.
That woeful run of form cost them the chance to battle it out for a return to the Premier League, and squad depth and rotation will again be crucial if they are to get that opportunity again this term.
It’s very difficult for players to maintain a high level of performance over the course of the long, hard slog that is a Championship campaign – options, especially in attacking positions, are vital for any side targeting promotion.
And that is what Lookman can offer in the second half of the season.
The 20-year-old has the pace and trickery to take defenders on and get balls into the box, while he has the added bonus of having produced some of his best football at second tier level with Charlton Athletic back in the 2015/16 season.
Be it off the bench later on in games against tiring backlines, or indeed from the start, the England Under-20 international can offer something else to this Leeds team, and given that he hasn’t featured much in the first half of the season, he is likely to be fresh and therefore ready to help their promotion push.
Leeds aren’t far away from the play-off places and certainly have the quality in the squad to make the top six come the end of the season – adding Lookman can only further enhance their chances.
And that is why Christiansen and the club’s hierarchy must act quickly to land the Everton star this month.
