The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned about transfer reports. Indeed, there doesn’t look like being much in the way of incomings right now and recent suggestions that skipper Jamaal Lascelles was a target for Tottenham and Chelsea have seriously scared out punters clad in black and white.
Though Lascelles has previously claimed he’s happy at St. James’ Park, all this has reminded our drinkers of the Andy Carroll saga back in 2011. The Geordie striker is another who didn’t want to leave, though Mike Ashley all but forced him out when Liverpool came calling with a rather large offer late on in the January window.
Though this is a transfer saga likely to run and run, it’s not all too hard to imagine the Sports Direct mogul adopting the same strategy.
If he does, surely Benitez would depart. Working on a tight budget is one thing, but losing such a key figure of his team – who has expressed no desire to go – would make his position almost untenable. Resisting any major moves, baring a frankly ludicrous offer, would at least show that the Magpies mean business, even if they can’t spend like the rest of the division.
An Andy Caroll-like involvement would wreck the Toon Army’s campaign long before it even starts and leave the club without any real sense of direction.
