There’s a lot going on in the Football Transfer Tavern today as punters arrive for their post-work beers and talk has turned to news that Wigan will sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Joel in the next few days.
Mail Online report that the third choice shot stopper at Atletico will join on a short-term loan deal as he looks to get some more first team experience under his belt after a loan spell at Rayo Vallecano last season.
The Spanish youth prospect could well challenge Ali Al-Habsi for a starting spot and Joel’s arrival could be considered as something of a coup for Martinez with the keeper being highly rated in Spain.
Roberto Martinez’s side are currently struggling in 18th place in the Premier League and need reinforcements to avoid another relegation battle with a loan move for Manchester United’s Angelo Henriquez already done and dusted in this transfer window.
Joel will have to weigh up his options as he could eventually become the first choice Atletico keeper when impressive Chelsea loanee Thibaut Courtois returns to London. The keeper could prove a valuable addition at the DW Stadium for the rest of the season as the Latics seek to keep their place in the Premier League.
