Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner will be one man who is no longer watching the World Cup this summer as his most saleable asset becomes less and less valuable by the minute.
Oh the benefit of hindsight….. The £30m that Manchester City offered to the club for midfielder James Milner would’ve looked like daylight robbery, had it been accepted, following his inept performance on the left flank against the USA a week ago.
Even moneybags Manchester City will be questioning whether he is worth pursuing at that amount potentially casting the whole transfer into doubt. That would, of course, severely affect Martin O’Neill’s spending plans this summer with him having rather less money to bring in players.
Nevertheless, Villa are believed to be preparing a £6m bid to acquire Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey as replacement for 39-year-old Brad Friedel.
The club are also trying to lure Croation international Eduardo Da Silva away from the Emirates. Arsene Wenger is said to be willing to let the striker leave for just £5m.
Finally, Martin O’Neill is still thought to be chasing Tottenham Hotspur’s Robbie Keane with both cash and player-exchange deals an option. Spurs would likely look to recoup a large chunk of the £12m they paid Liverpool for the Irishman last year.
