Leeds beat off competition from West Ham to land Villa left back

However their mood is improved somewhat by news from Sky Sports that Stephen Warnock has moved to Elland Road in a permanent deal.

The 31-year-old has been frozen out at Villa Park by Paul Lambert and he was forced to train with the youth team before spending three months on-loan at Bolton, making 15 appearances.

Since returning to the Midlands outfit, the former Liverpool and Blackburn left back has been linked with moves to Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United among others but he has decided to move to the Yorkshire club instead.

United boss Neil Warnock – no relation – said: “I’m absolutely delighted. Stephen has the experience I think we need in that position.

“He is a former international who, for whatever reason, has been allowed to leave Aston Villa.

“He’s a player I’ve tried to sign a few times before and I’m pleased he turned down West Ham to come here.”

Warnock, who has over 200 Premier League appearances to his name, joined Villa in a £6 million deal from Blackburn in 2009 and even went on to be part of Fabio Capello’s England squad for the 2010 World Cup, in front of Everton’s Leighton Baines.

Is this the fresh start Warnock needs? Let us know your thoughts below.
