Noel Whelan believes that fitness is key for any potential Leeds United signing this summer, given Marcelo Bielsa’s demands at Elland Road.
The Whites have been an excellent addition to the Premier League this season, with their matches famed for being among the most entertaining in the top flight.
A lot of that is down to Bielsa’s style of play, with the Argentine demanding endless pressing from his players, as well as vibrant attacking football.
It is a complex way of playing, however, and if individuals don’t possess elite levels of fitness, they may struggle to adapt to the demands of the Leeds manager.
Whelan highlights importance of fitness
Bielsa will probably be looking at new signings ahead of next season, but he will likely have specific players in mind due to his aforementioned approach.
Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds striker Whelan discussed the importance of fitness for any possible new addition, saying they simply must excel in that regard to be a success:
“They’ve got to have the requirements that match what Marcelo Bielsa wants. That’s not in games but more importantly in training, so you can learn what is required.
“It’s all about education with Marcelo Bielsa. It is not just about training. It’s educating these players in those specific roles, those team roles. Everything that’s required to get the best out the individual and the team collectively.
“Fitness is huge when they’re looking to recruit and sign new players. Can they withstand not just the 90 minutes but the training that’s required as well?”
Transfer Tavern take
Whelan is spot on – with Leeds’ fitness levels through the roof under Bielsa, allowing them to keep working relentlessly until the final whistle.
Some players may not have the hunger or physical attributes to shine in this Whites team, in which case they won’t be viewed as transfer targets.
In other news, a former Leeds hero has been talking up one potential signing this summer. Read about the player in question here.
