Leeds should be on high alert to Cameron Carter-Vickers’ availability

Leeds United continued their excellent start to the season on Tuesday night with a 2-2 draw against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.

Although the Whites were far from their best, they showed excellent character to twice come from behind to level up the scoring. One of the club’s main problems on the night was in defence where Marcelo Bielsa was forced to adopt a pragmatic strategy shortly before the game kicked off.

Indeed, Liam Cooper was injured in the warm-up and with a lack of available options in central defence Bielsa decided to move Luke Ayling to centre-back and brought in 18-year-old Jamie Shackleton at right-back.

Leeds’ defence was rather shaky throughout the evening against a well drilled Swansea outfit, and there’s no doubt that they could have walked away with nothing on another day.

The game served as a timely reminder of Leeds’ need to bring in a new centre-back before the loan window closes, and a recent report from The London Evening Standard suggests an ideal candidate should be available on a season-long loan deal, namely Tottenham’s Cameron Carter-Vickers.

According to the report, Carter-Vickers will be allowed to embark on a season-long loan deal in the Championship this season, with Swansea currently the favourites to secure his signature.

But if Leeds are serious about their promotion bid then they will rival the Swans for the 20-year-old prodigy, as he would be an excellent solution to their nagging defensive problem.

With a commanding physical presence and plenty of experience training alongside some of Europe’s best attackers to bring to the table, there’s no doubt that Carter-Vickers could become a resounding success at Elland Road.

Leeds’ draw at Swansea this week was a glaring reminder of their need to sign a new centre-back before the end of the month, so Bielsa must act fast in response to recent reports and bring the highly-promising centre-back to the club.
