According to recent reports, Leeds United have a ‘concrete’ interest in Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta this January.
So far this season, the £13.5 million-rated man has impressed over his 14 Bundesliga appearances for Bo Svensson’s side, scoring seven goals and providing one assist, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.77 – ranking him as the club’s second-best performer in the German top flight.
It would appear these performances have caught the eye of Orta, with Leeds now thought to be weighing up making a move for the 6 foot 4 colossus – he averages nearly 7 aerial duels per 90 minutes across his entire career, winning over half of them, via Whoscored (under ‘detailed’).
Do you think Leeds need to sign a striker in January?
Transfer Tavern Take
While Leeds have indeed impressed going forwards this season – the club currently rank fifth in the xG table, meaning they could move even higher in the league by adding more goalscorers.
Patrick Bamford is, in reality, Marcelo Bielsa’s only real out and out first-team striker, as Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo tend to play slightly deeper. As such, should Bamford pick up a knock or be suspended, his absence would hit Leeds hard.
If the club were indeed to bring in Mateta this January, he would likely not only play back up to the Englishman, but push him for his starting place – Mateta actually boasts the exact same goals per 90 minutes (0.6) this season as Bamford (0.6).
