Leeds United: Emiliano Buendia emerges as deadline day target

Leeds United: Emiliano Buendia emerges as deadline day target - Championship

Leeds United are considering a deadline day move for Norwich City’s Emiliano Buendia, according to the Daily Mail.

The domestic transfer window will come to a close this Friday (16/10) and Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is seemingly still keen to bring in a new midfielder option after missing out on Michael Cuisance.

Interest from Leeds to a number of Championship players has been rife over the last couple of weeks with Derby County’s Louie Sibley and Norwich’s Todd Cantwell both linked.

Cantwell who suffered relegation from the Premier League last term, is a potential arrival with Bielsa said to be keen on the attack minded midfielder who netted six goals and two assists in his 37 top-flight appearances.

Sibley, who has also been linked, has been impressing at Pride Park over the last 12 months, netting five goals and gaining two assists in 11 games in England’s second tier.

Emi to Elland Road?

With interest in Cantwell and Sibley in the background, a third Championship player has now emerged as a potential signing for the Whites.

The Daily Mail’s report claims that Bielsa tried to sign the 23-year-old playmaker in 2018 and that he is now considering making a move to complete a deal this time around before Friday’s 5pm deadline.

Buendia, who is valued at £13.05m by Transfermarkt, appeared 36 times in the Premier League last term, netting one goal and gaining seven assists in the process, while he also created more chances than any player in the league not named Kevin De Bruyne, Trent Alexander-Arnold or Jack Grealish.

Who would be the better signing? Cantwell, Sibley or Buendia?

Looking at each player, it is hard to predict who would prove to be the better signing, but Cantwell does have the better eye for goal on paper at least.

That being said, Leeds fans have seen Bielsa spend wisely this summer, and would surely have no qualms about any of the three players coming in – Buendia’s assist numbers could fill the Pablo Hernandez void as the fan favourite ages.

The Spaniard will turn 36 by the end of the campaign and having racked up 39 assists during his time at Elland Road his eventual phasing out will create a need for more playmaking ability.

All are youthful options and can be seen as potential key players for the future, but who do you think would be the best signing for Leeds? Let us know in the comments section below…
