It has been claimed that Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who has been linked with a move to Leeds United, may be available for a transfer fee of close to €20m (about £18m), which is £14.5m less than his €36m (about £32.5m) buyout clause, per Intra Sports.
It is claimed that Leeds remain interested in the 24-year-old Uruguay international and according to LeedsLive, Nandez could potentially represent ‘a box-to-box alternative’ to current Whites midfielder Mateusz Klich, while he would also be capable of providing additional cover for Kalvin Phillips, who primarily plays as a defensive midfielder.
How does Nandez compare to Phillips and Klich?
There are, perhaps, some stylistic comparisons to be made between Nandez and Phillips, given that, according to WhoScored, both men like to play the ball off the ground often, while they also like to be heavily involved in winning the ball back for their team, with Phillips making the second-highest number of tackles per Premier League game of any Leeds player this term and Nandez making the joint-third-highest number of tackles per Serie A game of any Cagliari player this term (WhoScored).
Meanwhile, given that he primarily plays as a central midfielder, similar to Klich, and he has made more tackles and more dribbles per Serie A game than Klich has made per Premier League game this season, perhaps it’s understandable why Nandez has been named as an alternative to the Poland international.
If he could indeed provide depth at both positions by showing elements of both players’ game, he would be a very astute signing.
Could Leeds United sign Nandez?
Last year, Nandez’s agent claimed that the midfielder would like to play under current Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, so if the Whites are interested and can muster up the alleged £18m transfer fee it would cost to prise him from Cagliari, then perhaps this move could suit all parties.
Given that the Marcelo Bielsa has been interested in the Uruguayan for some time, the fact that his price tag has suddenly plummeted ahead of the January window is certainly a big boost for the club’s ambitions of getting this deal done.
